I know I'm broadening the topic of the OP a little with my beef with SHU's choice of mascot/nickname...

As for the ND/Fighting Irish...Nova is a real Irish Catholic school; look around campus at all the building names. Sullivan, Sheehan, Caughlin, Kennedy, McGuire...I did a recruiting trip at ND for swimming, and all the buildings had Polish names. My Austrian Catholic relatives are all the huge ND fans (and boy did I get hell when I picked Nova over ND)...the Irish Catholic side didn't care.

I remember the joking retort at the 'vanilla-nova' comments...of course we had diversity. We have the Irish Catholics, Italian Catholics, Polish Catholics...sounds like diversity to me!

We should take full advantage of the Marquette Bat as our mascot. The Marquette Golden Bats, if you will. Unique and relevant. Golden Eagles is too commonplace in college athletics.

I would love it if we could back to the Warriors. I understand the offensive meaning of the mascot and I'm fine with that, but MU could just be the warriors and have a warrior mascot that's not a Native American.

I'm just going to assume you are joking about the Bat scenario.

I am indeed joking about that Bat nickname. Though, I do find it funny when colleges have quirky mascots. UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and Williams College Purple Cow are my favorites.

In any case, I'm fine with Golden Eagles if the alternative is racism. Though, I wonder what the Warrior would look like if it wasn't a Native American? Usually, when that happens the mascot is quirky.

I think you could just use the monogram and not need a "warrior" other than the students just like the golden state warriors but if you absoulutley need a warrior if you look up warriors on google or google images most its actually quite hard to find a native american warrior referenced other than Geronimo(who is on the wikipedia page). You can use anything to represent a warrior, if you need an example why not use joan of arc maybe something like this:

Coach Al Mcguire:
"I like seashells and balloons, ribbons and medals, bare feet and wet grass."
"When I'm losing, they call me nuts. When I'm winning, they call me eccentric."
"Queen of victory, pray for us."

Has anyone thought of adopting the Frito Bandito for the mascot? There is already the gold color tie in. And corporate sponsorship possibilities. He is only mildly offensive.

You could also work in the Ay, yi, yi, yi... into the fight song.
