In 1993 I enrolled at Xavier and became a huge fan of the hoops program. In recent years it's been a lot easier to be an X fan than a DPU fan. It's odd for me to have both schools in the same conference.
I will say that I am optimistic for DPU's future. They have some solid recruits coming in from the Chicago Public league over the next couple of years. So if that door is open again watch out.
I often point to X's success on the DPU board as a template for building a program. Unfortunately, DPU has a horrible AD with connections to the big money donors. Any other AD would have been fired simply for hiring Jerry Wainwright. Yet her past 2 hires have been pretty piss poor and there is not even a hint of her job being in jeopardy.
I feel the same way about X coming to Chicago to play DPU. Ray Meyer was a great man. I went to his camp until I graduated high school in 1993. When Joey was coaching the Chicago Skyliners of some new version of the ABA, my brother and I went to catch a game. At least 5 yrs after I had gone to his camp. Always the supportive father Ray was at the game, spotted my brother and I and remembered us by name. Classy classy guy.
Welcome to the Holy Land. I think you'll enjoy the basketball talk here. While Xavier hadn't begun their ascent in college basketball in the 70's DePaul and Marquette were my second favorite teams because of their success and having Ray Meyer & Al McGuire (heck who didn't like those guys?!) I am thrilled they will be now be making yearly visits to Cintas.
