Great CBS podcast about UConn rejoining

Postby adoraz » Sat Jul 13, 2019 1:46 pm

This is the only college basketball podcast that's active the entire year. I believe it is the most popular one:

https://www.cbssports.com/podcasts/eye- ... asketball/

07/02: The NCAA slams Kevin Ollie, and UConn doesn't care because it's going to the Big East next year anyway

It's 56 minutes long and almost entirely covers UConn infractions and the impact of them joining the Big East.

Is it Norlander and Parrish? I've been listening to them for a few years now, but I think it's Rothstein that claims the year-round coverage. Could be wrong on that one. Katz also does it all year. Norlander's as fair as it gets, and he's been very bullish on the Big East. Parrish is a Memphis homer.

Parrish throws out every AAC fan talking point. "WeLl tHiS isN'T thE SaME BiG EaST!!!" Almost exactly the same league they joined in 1980. Take away syracuse and boston college and add xavier, butler, creighton, marquette, and depaul. 6 of the original 8 (or 5 of 7 if you exclude nova)

I love how Parrish tries to compare it to the Big 12 and then realizes he was totally wrong. He knew he was in trouble when he was trying to compare Nova to Texas.

Yeah, I was just going by their slogan but it appears Rothstein is once a week too. His is a bit different though because he mostly focuses on interviewing coaches. I'll have to listen to his podcast from last week.

Anyways, I enjoyed this one because Parrish didn't have much of a response for how successful the Big East has been, and even he admitted this is a massive loss for the AAC.

It's funny because every time I see that argument people mention Creighton and typically nobody else. That's because Creighton is really the only outlier and they know it.

Catholic 7: most of the 5 eastern teams (closest to UConn) have gotten significantly better since UConn was last in the Big East. Nova, Providence and Seton Hall all have vastly improved. St. John's is about the same. Georgetown has gotten worse but should rebound.
Xavier: same area as Cincy, but X is a better team
Butler: played against UConn in the 2011 National Championship

Creighton: yes, they're an outlier in terms of location and shared history, but they're a good team and travelling to Omaha only occupies 1/20 of UConn's Big East schedule

UConn will be right at home with these teams.

Even the Creighton thing is overplayed, because the second and third iterations of the Big East both had a team in Florida that was a huge outlier. It just changes the direction that you travel to get to the one team that sticks out.

I got curious and looked at the distance (not driving) from Storrs to every BE/ACK cities and found 5 schools further than Omaha.

Providence - 42 miles
SJU - 113
Seton Hall - 127
Nova - 199
Temple - 199
Georgetown - 322
ECU - 508
Xavier - 671
Cinci - 671
Butler - 741
DePaul - 792
Marquette - 814
UCF - 1050
Memphis - 1065
USF - 1116
Creighton - 1223
Tulane - 1286
Tulsa - 1330
Wichita State - 1358
SMU - 1477
Houston - 1532

That's 5 further + 3 almost as far.

I suspect we'll become great baseball rivals with Creighton, annually competing for the conference title.

First off, the creighton thing is laughable. travel is not even comparable. i don't know why aac fans won't concede this very obvious, objective point.
Second, id like the record to show that Xavier is actually about 1.5 miles further east than UC and therefore closer to UConn, thus helping their travel situation. You're welcome
