Gonzaga?

The home for Big East hoops

The WCC has been a good home for Gonzaga but as a basketball program Gonzaga has outgrown the WCC. Gonzaga would be a great fit for the new league in basketball for both the men's and women's teams. Gonzaga charters and already flies from one end of the country to the other playing anybody and everybody. The Pacific time zone does bring another audience to the party. As far as a travel partner if I had to choose from our WCC brethren it would be Santa Clara or San Francisco, BYU would be a better option( additional 50 million potential viewers) but doesn't fit the mold. It is my belief that Gonzaga could place their Olympic sports in another western based conference. However, keeping them in the WCC might be possible if Gonzaga were to agree to play hoops against current WCC members during the OOC season as a visit from Gonzaga is usually the only time our brethren have a sell out.

As a Zag fan I can live without a first place finish in a conference that gets four bids to the Dance annually and your rpi actually goes up instead of plummeting when you reach the conference portion of the season. The Zags can hold their own against any proposed team in the new conference. Additional revenue from the new league would more than offset the costs incurred by Gonzaga and the affiliation would also aid in recruiting.

Gonzaga is a nationally known and respected program that plays big games on big stages like this past weekend at Butler. By the way there was a push (foul) before the bad pass/ steal but that would have spoiled the ending.

Gonzaga has been one of the best programs in the West year in and year out and other than distance fits the mold perfectly and adds a solid tournament team to the mix.

If the Zags want in, they are more than interested, the C-7 should find a away to make it work.

Just my opinion.

Go!! Zags!!!

Zag fan here.... I've been reading this board constantly hoping to get some inside scoop on the situation of the C7 and wondering what new teams will be added. As you may know, Gonzaga is very interested in joining the new conference as they pretty much said publicly "invite us!". I was wondering if anyone knows any more information on the last team that will be added and if Gonzaga is in the talks of being that last team. What are their chances? Everyone in Spokane would like to see this happen. Thanks

If we could get just the basketball piece, Gonzaga would be a shoe in.

I'm pretty sure they've indicated they don't want associate members. I'd love to see Gonzaga in, but the travel even seems an issue for Creighton.

I guess if the TV folks want it to happen, it might though.

Only if they are willing to offer enough to offset everyone's travel to have Gonzaga over the next choice. Even then, the long term possible instability might scare them off.

I'm curious if Gonzaga fans even want in.

If it was just basketball (unlikely), the cost to fly to Spokane once every other year would be insignificant.

That's an 'if' that in all liklihood doesn't matter. I would think Gonzaga might need to get some sort of travel stipend, they're going to outrageous travel bills across all their sports. A quick look suggests they support 16 programs.

I think there's zero chance of Gonzaga in all sports unless Fox did what you're saying and supplemented the costs incurred by all parties. If there was a way to do just basketball, I bet it's darn near 100% likely they would be invited.

Adding Gonzaga to the media deal would, I guess, already garner more money than by any but Butler or Xavier. It's just about how much are they worth.

I understand the sentiment on basketball only, but that's a bad situation. The BE7 want stability, one sport teams are going to hurt that. Gonzaga might still be added in all sports, it wouldn't shock me, but it won't happen without number crunching. They can stand to lose some money on it if they think other intangibles are worth it. I have no idea, maybe it does work. Either way on Gonzaga, I'm not going to be upset. I'll be worried if they chose basketball only.
