Eamonn Brennan The Athletic... https://theathletic.com/1436574/2019/12 ... hem-elite/

Is the BE (ahem) elite?

KenPom.com’s ranking of conferences, which is based on the average adjusted efficiency margin of a team expected to go .500 in conference play, had the Big East fifth last season. Thus far — and it’s still really early on this front, obviously — the league ranks third, one spot ahead of the ACC. Since the great schism of 2013, the Big East has ranked fifth, second, third, third and third.

So, yes. The modern Big East very much belongs in any discussion of the “power” conferences, however many power conferences you want to include. And if I may say so, college basketball fans should be happy about this. The Big East has proved, above all else, that you can be both a basketball-only conference and a power conference at the same time.

With three or four non-conference games left for each team, it looks like 2nd or 3rd is the most likely landing spot for the Big East, with 1st or 4th being more extreme outcomes. That's pretty damn good, especially when there don't appear to be any elite teams in the conference.

Funny to hear him say that. Quite a different tune than he was singing when ESPN was cutting his checks.

Eamonn is one of many current college basketball writers who really don't have a good grasp of college basketball. i'm glad he's come around, but i don't put much stock in what he says

I always appreciated Eamonn’s coverage and thought he was a good reporter.

I do not think there is any doubt that the Big East is an elite conference. Those who were around for the events of 2013 will remember that one of the digs against the C-7 split was that they will never win a National Championship against the football conferences. Since the 2013 reconfiguration there have been six national championships. The ACC won three, the Big East two and the AAC one (and the team that won will be a Big East member in seven months). As to the four other "Power Conferences", the SEC last won a national championship in 2012. The Big XII in 2008. The Big Ten in 2000 and the Pac-12 in 1997. Let's not forget that the Big East had won in 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2013 as well. So yes, we are an elite conference. Let's also remember that since the C-7 split, we have been a destination conference. Butler, Xavier and Creighton all joined in 2013 and in 2020, UConn will come back leaving probably the best of the Group of 5 football conferences to do so.

The only thing critics are left to question is our tourney performance as a whole. I still think we have a "Villanova and everyone else" reputation whether or not that's fair. Yes Xavier had the Sweet 16 and so did Butler I believe. But we need several teams consistently getting to the Sweet 16 if not further to silence the last critics left. They do have a point there. Overall in 6 years or so, how many times did a Big East team get to the Sweet 16 or further? 3-4 times? Out of 30 chances or so (quick estimate about 5 teams per year in NCAA x 6 years = 30 chances)? That is pretty rough. I know the seeding gets tough too with the conference beating up on each other, but man we need to do serious work in the tourney.

I’m contractually obligated to point out that we made both a sweet sixteen and an elite eight in separate years, but we are somewhat culpable with the two second round upsets when we were a 1 and 2 seed
