I wonder if we’ll see coaches’ salaries decline. The money’s got to come from somewhere. There’s not an endless supply . . . except for Texas and Notre Dame. Think about what this means for a football school with 85 players on a roster. And what about schools in the South where baseball is also big time?

With the SEC and Big Ten tv contracts getting set to explode, why would they?

What about the rest? A lot of people are looking at SEC and B1G as the Power 2. Will the money be there for everyone else. In football, in particular, everyone else’s games are less meaningful. The Big XII has last most of their biggest markets and the PAC 12 has lost a chunk of theirs. Lots of contracts are coming onto the market. We’ll see. Has ESPN learned their lesson?

Big 12's new deals didn't lose anything. Pac 12 is the real interesting one for sure.

FWIW rumor seems to be that Pitino will end up with GTown. Doesn't sound like SJ even bothered to call.

Norlander interview with Rick Pitino...

Apparently there's no buyout anymore with Iona. Couple of good tidbits that i hadn't heard yet (though you guys may have mentioned it):

1. He won't ever coach in the Big Ten cuz Minnesota fired Richard.

2. There are 20 to 30 states that he will never live in.

3. He doesn't like being in a one-bid conference.

4. He would go somewhere that has a reasonable chance at a Final Four.

5. Last year, at least 3 schools approached him... Maryland... Rhode Island... and Holy Cross.

All indications are that both St John's and Georgetown are very much possibilities. In the interview he mentioned a couple of times that he loves being only 8 minutes from Iona to his house. Jamaica Queens of course isn't too much farther (maybe a 30 minute distance).

He also wants to be in an enjoyable city. I would again put both SJU and the Hoyas in that category. Washington is a super city along with NY.

If we eliminate 30 states that he would never live... or, if we try to list 20 states that he *would* live... that would certainly include St John's and Georgetown. Probably eliminates the Deep South... and i cant see him taking a final job in Tallahassee, Gainesville, or anywhere in Texas.

i just imagine he'd look for a big cosmopolitan city, preferably northeast. All signs point to the Johnnies or Hoyas in that order, in my opinion.

- Boston College if their coach gets canned-- unlikely.
- Georgia Tech... this would be a weird choice.
- Notre Dame (maybe the Irish overcome his city preference).
- Stanford... improbable... not a west coast guy... too much drama in the Pac-12 right now.

Miami of Fla isn't dumping Larranaga... maybe Austin, but unlikely due to probable not wanting to live in Texas...

If Mike Hopkins gets canned, Washington might be the best job opening other than maybe Georgetown. Seattle is a great city, but yeah like Stanford I can't imagine Pitino wanting to live out west at this point in his career. The fact that Pitino isn't a Big East coach already is an epic failure on Georgetown, SJU, and DePaul's part. Even if he's snatched up after this season, that's a couple of years completely wasted and now that much tougher to rebuild.

I really hope I'm wrong, but I don't see Pitino winding up at either Georgetown or St. John's. As crazy as it sounds, I don't think Georgetown really cares that much about winning. I don't think they like being the butt of jokes, while setting record after record for futility, but I think they'd be perfectly fine nestling in around the 6th through 8th place finish most years. Why else would they have allowed this embarrassment to continue on for so long? I could see a retread like Mike Brey being the choice there.

St John's would like to win,but unfortunately has had total incompetents most years at the decision making level. Maybe Fr. Shanley can reverse that, but he'll have his work cut out for him getting members of the Board to even consider Pitino, if that's who Shanley himself wants. The smart money would be on St. John's screwing it up again. As for Pitino, I wouldn't be surprised to see him coaching again next year at Iona. I think there are very few jobs he'd consider at this point in his life, although Georgetown and St john's would be two of them. It's a shame the way this is destined to play out.

If he ends up at a school other than St John's or Georgetown, it's a complete failure by the old bell cows. They should just shutter their programs.
