Rutgers is officially a train wreck. New AD was "abusive coach"

Rutgers adds to their self inflicted train wreck by hiring an AD who was apparently dismissed from Tennessee for things rather similar to why their basketball coach was recently fired:

NEWARK, N.J. -- The woman hired to clean up Rutgers' scandal-scarred athletic program quit as Tennessee's women's volleyball coach 16 years ago after her players submitted a letter complaining she ruled through humiliation, fear and emotional abuse, The Star-Ledger reported Saturday night on its website.

"The mental cruelty that we as a team have suffered is unbearable," the players wrote about Julie Hermann, hired May 15 as Rutgers' athletic director after serving as the No. 2 athletic administrator at Louisville.

Less than two weeks after she was introduced as Rutgers' new AD, Julie Hermann is facing abuse allegations from her former players on the University of Tennessee women's volleyball team. In the letter submitted by all 15 team members, the players said Hermann called them "whores, alcoholics and learning disabled" and they wrote: "It has been unanimously decided that this is an irreconcilable issue."

Congratulations, Rutgers. You really have outdone yourself this time.

Julie Hermann should never have been hired as athletic director. If the allegations from her former Tennessee volleyball players are true – and there are too many of those players for them to be dismissed – then, in the mid-1990s, Hermann was not much different than the man who made Rutgers the worst kind of punch line.

Not really. They were a large land grant university in a neighboring state and a large TV market. They were always on the short list. They were a better choice than most of the league.

It was all about forcing NY market to purchase the Big Ten Network, plain and simple.

While understood, B1G fans view it as weakening the conference. I'm closely tied to Wisconsin and Michigan fandom, and I know any number of people cursing it or calling for a reversal. ...but applauding it? None. Nebraska, though, that was a well liked move.

"Rapidly declining" is a bit of an exaggeration. I'm not familiar with most of the Midwestern states, but Wisconsin grew by 6% over the last decade. Is it growing as quickly as some states? No. But we certainly aren't "rapidly declining".
