still thoroughly confused on the BE 'protected rivalry'...

Postby dmac80 » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:51 pm

I found this on a Villanova site, and now I'm even more confused. If the rival changes each year, then isn't it just a final in conference game and not really a 'protected' rivalry? I don't get it.

UPDATE - 8/29 (6:00pm): New Big East media relations chief John Paquette has clarified to VUhoops that the end-of-season rivalry games will change from year-to-year. So, even if Villanova closes the 2013-14 season with Seton Hall this year, they could be scheduled for Georgetown next season.

"[T]hat does not mean every team will have one rival -- or the same rival -- on the last day of the season," Paquette explained.

In effect, the Big East has only decided to make the last day of the regular season a rivalry for each school. Which rival a school will play, however, can change on a yearly basis.

I agree, just a little hype for the last game.

I think they mean like GTown will play SJU one year and Nova the next or Marq playing DePaul one year and Creighton or Butler the next. I doubt we see many Butler/Providence games or SJU/Creighton games to end the year.

So essentially, the last conference game of the year will be played against.........a conference opponent.........every year. Good to know.

Looks like it is just one rivalry game. A way to hype up Georgetown v villanova.

I don't think anyone here would call shu v butler, or providence v creighton or sju v Marquette, "rivalry" games.
