3. St. John's Red Storm

Again, St. John's was another mediocre team last season, but they are also a school with a ton of basketball history. The Red Storm have the ninth-most victories in NCAA history, with 1,854 to date. They also averaged an insane amount of fans last season. St. John's averaged just under 10,000 per game this season, but they play at two venues. The first being a 5,600-person Carnesecca Arena, the second being Madison Square Garden, which holds just under 20,000 fans for basketball games. St. John's averaged more than 18,000.

It's not surprising if you're a SJ fan or in the NYC area. St. John's has a large fanbase that many forget about since we've been dormant for the better part of 30 years. Many forget we have 20,000 students and several campuses on LI, Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, Rome, etc. We are a pretty large university in terms of enrollment which I believe is around the very top of the Big East. It's common to see SJ shirts, hats, sweatshirts, etc. walking anywhere in the metro area. Even though we haven't had big success in decades, Lavin helped begin the wake up in 2011 when we were ranked, beat several top 5 teams, and went to the tourney as an Elite 8 darkhorse until Kennedy got hurt. Then a few other seasons we appeared in the top 25 and had some signature wins like Duke at MSG. Lavin got the buzz going and even though he didn't perform well, he reinvigorated the sleeping fanbase. Mullin being coach awoke the fanbase even more, especially the older ones who saw him play. It was a failure overall but at least he got Ponds and went to 1 tourney. We may not be consistently good yet, but we have had enough moments that have led to great attendance. When we are winning in a big way consistently, you'll see every game sold out even at MSG. Just imagine #15 St. John's vs. #18 UConn at MSG.

Not trying to lob any grenades but just curious... I've personally made the trek to watch Nova-SJU 3x in the past 5 years. Seemed like a good portion of the crowd was local VU alums/fans. I would imagine the SHU game was somewhat similar. Also a lot of Duke alums in NYC, so those games must have a large Duke alum contingent. Then the midwest teams seem to get to play at Carnesseca mostly (I think you guys played all the Midwest teams, including Top 20 Marq., there last year, right?).

Anyway, may not be germane to this discussion and I don't doubt that there are a lot of SJU fans in NY b/c of the size of the school and the sheer amount of people in metro NYC. But how much does the fact that NYC is such an awesome destination for an away game, and so convenient for fans of some of the schools in the NEast to get to, affect SJU MSG attendance? Any guess on % of visiting fans that come in and fill out the stands as a result?

Doesn't really matter, the money all goes to SJU. I've been to many games at MSG where opposing fans claim half the fans are theirs and it's usually about a quarter. So 3 quarters of an 18k+ sell out is still around 14k. The local visting team alums usually buy better seats and are closer to the court and make it look like they are a larger presence since it's their usually only game they attend that season while SJU fans make up the majority of the upper levels since they attend for the most part multiple games there a season. Now schools like VU and Hall can bring more fans since it's an easy drive/lots of alum who live locally but thats also true on the flip with SJU fans going to both of those venues during away games. I personally have been to both of those schools venues, and have been to at least a half dozen games at the Rock since i'm in Jersey.

Like I said at the top, it doesn't really matter who shows up just as long as they buy tickets and the school gets the money. And yes to those wondering SJU gets the money for the gate while MSG gets the concessions money. We pay a rental fee for the building and collect all ticket sales.

I'd be willing to see the Johnnies as a top tier conference team for 3-4 years...just to see if all this BS would actually play out in real time. :o
Got a sneaking hunch that NYC isn't as great of an advantage as MM and Redman suggest. Go Johnnies.

#15 Johnnies!

What has Creighton ever done? It's super easy to get fans to show up for a team when they are one of the few entertainment options available in that state.

How many opposing fans show up to your games? Let's see that attendance record when you guys become a bottom feeder. Notice I said when and not if...it's coming Git, it's coming...
