Big John and his Hoyas embodied the Big East at a time when we were introducing Big East basketball to the nation. I still think one of the best quotes was when he walked over to Dave Gavitt as time was winding down in the 1984 National Championship game and before giving him a hug said - "How do you like the Big East now?" We loved it then and ever since. Rest in peace Big John.

You can make the case that in the DMV area (District, Maryland, Virginia)- that the 3 biggest basketball icons ever have passed here in the last 7 months. Morgan Wooten, Wes Unseld, and now Big John.

My past memories of Georgetown relate to Big John roaming the sideline with a towel over his shoulder, working the Refs. He was an intimidating force. His teams always played tough defense and you knew you were in for a battle when you played Georgetown. RIP!

RIP to a legend. He helped put Georgetown Basketball on the map, and - most importantly - graduated an overwhelming majority of his players and helped them become better men as a result of it. I'm sure watching his son become HC at Georgetown as a huge accomplishment for him in his own right as well, not to mention getting to watch Ewing take over the reigns as well.

I agree with everyones' posts.

Sorry, to hear this. I thought we'd have many more years with him like with Louie. Very proud that he was a Friar alum. Loved his teams, coaching, style, outspoken-ness, social commentary, and that he didn't put up with any BS from anyone even in retirement.

Sad news, a true pioneer and larger than life person. Coach Thompson is absolutely one of the reasons the Big East was / is what it is. Condolences to the entire Hoya family.

What an impact Big John had on college basketball and on societal awareness when it wasn't cool to speak out. Sad day.
