Question about C7 / Big East NCAA units

Postby ArmyVet » Tue Mar 26, 2013 10:33 am

Anyone know if the NCAA units earned by the C7 be kept by those schools, given back to the old Big East, or kept and distributed among the 10 new schools?

The C7 and ND were able to leave with their own units. The NCAA pays units to conferences not schools so the ND units will most likely transfer to the ACC and the C7 payouts will transfer to the NBE. The one thing i could not find was the amount of the units the earning team will be sharing with the rest of the conference. Most conferences average around 50/50. The A-10 was one of the most generous to earning teams at 75/25. Does anyone know what the new conference split is?

Army here is an article cite for ya if you are interested.

Anyone have the time to calculate the NCAA units earned by the C7 over the past 6 years? If that money is being distributed among all 10 Big East schools starting this year, that is a windfall I hadn't considered when we were talking about the huge money coming from Fox. I tend to think the C7 intend to keep a disproportionate share of the units for themselves although I could be wrong.

It's too bad that Butler, Xavier, and Creighton had to leave theirs behind because that'd be a ton of cash too.

Well the first thing is that the NCAA units get paid yearly and not upfront. so it won't all be distributed this year. Any money distributed this year will be split amongst the current BE, Louisville and Syracuse et al. As far as sharing future payments with the new members. Even at a 50/50 split i really just don't see why you would withhold the money. Units are worth about $242,200 at 50/50 they will be worth 121,100 in money to be split among the conference. Divided by 7 that is 17,300; divide by 10 it is 12,110; divide by 12 it is 10,091. So the difference is about 5-10 grand per unit. The C7 have 22 units over the past 5 years so the total amount saved will be about $110,000 to $220,000. Yes a big number for you and me but with the millions of fox dollars coming in would it be worth the ill will to save at most one or two hundred thousand?

Don't forget that the units are paid for 6 years too. If the new schools are getting a portion of the C7 units accrued during the previous 6 years that's a pretty good dowry.

The 220,000 and 110,000 dollar numbers would be if the 22 units were split 50/50 with the earning school and the conference and with the conference share split equally between the C7 and new members. this would be each year, until the units run out. Its a good number. Especially if you figure what the incoming schools will be giving up.

Much prefer this 50/50 split as it provides motivation for schools to shoot for NCAA berths instead of just sucking the teet on the best schools. The Valley had a split of each unit being divyed up into 11 pieces with each school getting one piece and the earning school getting two pieces or basically 18.18% of the unit.

There are a number of schools in the Valley sucking the teet of WSU (and formely Creighton) with no real incentive to spend on their program for the chance to bump up to 18.18% versus not spending/trying and getting 9.09% of each unit.

They are all congratulating themselves on the Valley board for WSU's Sweet 16 and CU's walking away from their share of units earned.

Teet suckers!!!

It will be really interesting to see how the league decides to divide up the units. I would think that the DePauls of the league would push for equal distribution whereas the Georgetown's will want the school earning the units to get a larger portion. The beauty of this league is that just about everyone believes they will be better off keeping a portion of their own shares which increases the investment each program will make.

Some back-of-the-napkin math:

2012 - 4 (Marquette 2, Georgetown 2)
2011 - 5 (St Johns 1, Georgetown 1, Marquette 3)
2010 - 4 (Marquette 1, Georgetown 1, Villanova 2)
2009 - 7 (Marquette 2, Villanova 5)
2008 - 7 (Georgetown 2, Marquette 2, Villanova 3)

That's 27 units to bring along to the "new" Big East. According to Forbes, each unit is worth $245,514, paid out each year for six years. That's $6.629 million a year from the NCAA on top of the TV money from Fox. It hasn't been divulged how they'll divide that money up, but if they split it 50/50, each team will get $368,271 and change each of the next six years on top of the Fox TV money (plus their half of whatever units they earn themselves).

And that's just the 27 units they're bringing along. Add the five units already accrued by Marquette, Georgetown, Villanova and presumably Butler (depending on if the A-10 gets the unit or the BE does) from this year's tourney, and the dollars go up even higher.

Butler brings 0 its units stay with the A-10 and the 2008 units end this year. But other than that your math is right if its a 50/50 split. Napkins have so many good uses.
