Do NOT stay in New Jersey for the Big East Torunament

I'm reading the big east tourney thread and it seems that a bunch of seton hall fans have convinced some Creightin fans that their experience should be spent in New Jersey. Please no. Don't listen to that terrible advice.

Airports:
They are all similar. Laguardia is the quickest and cheapest by cab. Newark is the most expensive by cab and takes the longest, but it has the best rail option. I have lived in NYC for 15 and would say I use LGA 50% of the time, JFK 30% of the time and EWK 20% of the time. Honestly, just find the best price flight and go with it. The Newark cab has a return fee and could cost you up to $80-100 (tip, tolls, return fee), while LGA Is $40-60 and JFK usually runs about $60-70.

Hotels:
Do NOT stay in New Jersey. You are not going to the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden so you can stay in New Jersey. MSG is centrally located and you can stay anywhere in the city. The hotels near MSG Tend to be a bit stayed and run down, but are cheap. You can stay in Times Square, by Grand Central Station, the Meat Packing district, Lincoln Center, downtown. Whatever. They are all fine and you can get to MSG no problem. It makes no sense to stay in New Jersey n,ess you actually live in New Jersey. You get a long commute and the NJ Transit trains don't run all night so you end up spending all of your savings on cab rides home.

Anybody going to the big east tournament and makes a concerted effort to fly into EWK over the others and plans on staying in New Jersey just because some seton hall fans told you to is a fool.

Not sure how the giant G next to my name would make someone think I was a Seton Hall fan but then again you can't spell Creighton so not a lot of attention paid to detail.

There are lots of great reasons to stay in NJ. It's super easy access to the city, cheaper hotel rooms, and your room will be larger than 70 square feet.

Tell someone from NYC you are going to use Newark airport and stay in New Jersey for a trip to NYC and they react like you kidnapped their puppy.

If spending 50 on a cab each way to the airport and 250 a night for a small hotel room seems like a lot of money, NJ is a much better bet. Yes the NJ transit trains stop running at 1am but PATH trains are 24 hours and that will get you back to Jersey City or Newark just fine.

If you actually read my post you'd see I told people to stay in either NJ or NYC as they both were great bets but for many people I'm sure this trip will come with a budget, so there are options.

Other than the fact that he can't spell Creighton, flies out of EWK (which is in Kansas) instead of EWR, doesn't know NJ Transit trains run until 1:20 in the morning which is plenty late enough and that Creighton fans asked about hotels in NJ because they don't want to spend the money to stay in NYC I'd say that was a great post.

Seriously, you don't go to the big east tournament to stay in New Jersey. Don't listen to people who tell you to do so.

But back to the topic, find a hotel in the city. Heck, stay in brooklyn if you have to. Do not stay in New Jersey for the big east tourney. You will blow through whatever saving you have on cabs back to the hotel.

Never been to NYC, wife was there earlier this year. And as someone else said, doesn't the PATH run 24 hrs and drops you close to MSG?????

Look, if you want to go to the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden and stay in New Jersey because some Seton Hall fans told you to, go for it. That is not my recommendation. Not at all. And I laugh at that idea and strongly advise against it. I think if you are hanging out at Stout or the Blarney Rock or Tir na nOg between sessions and were chatting with some Villanova, Georgetown or Providence fans and told them you opted to stay in Jersey they would look at you and ask why.

You are going to NYC, stay in NYC.

And like I said, don't have a preference for Newark airport. If that is the cheapest flight, then use Newark. If Laguardia or JFK are the cheapest, use those. If you do fly to Newark, then take the NJ Transit, because the cabs are so expensive (you have to pay return fees and tolls).

Another thing about the Big East tourney is that the east coast schools, while they are not huge state schools, they have tremendous NY presence. A huge percentage of Providence College is from Long Island. Villanova and Georgetown are known for pumping out graduates who work on Wall St. These aren't the type of schools that attract major in state student populations and have their students stay local upon graduation.

New York Penn Station is right next to MSG. Mass transit is the way to go in NYC. Do not rent a car in the city, you will spend all of your time looking for a parking space and all of your money paying for that space. The trains and subways get you where you need to go.

Here is another thing to be careful of. People from New Jersey or Long Island are famous for saying, "It's not that far, it only takes 15 minutes to get there..." Sure, that may be true, if you measure the exact rail time for a trip. But by the time you count in the time to get to the station (both ends), the wait time (you have to arrive early) and other delays and traffic and such, it always ends up taking an hour+ to get to some of those place. I work downtown with a few people who commute from New Jersey City, it takes them about 90 minutes door to door to get to work (and only about 20-30 minutes of that is spent on the 2/3 from Penn Station to Wall St).

Just be careful is all I am saying. You don't want to use up vacation days, spend money to come out here, and then have the experience diminished because you hoped to saved $50 per night to stay in NJ instead of soaking up the NYC experience.

Newark airport is the best to fly in and out of in the NYC area. They have a rail system that is easy to use and is quick. I agree you should stay in Manhattan but flying out of the NYC airports is a HUGE headache. Lived in and around NYC my whole life and have flown through each of the three airports. It's not even close when it comes to choosing which one I use.
