Curious to see what non-SJ fans think

I was just wondering...what do you non-SJ fans think of our coaching situation? If we fail to make the tourney, do you think Mullin should resign or be fired? The consensus with our fans was that there's way too much talent/experience to not make the tourney this year.

The Mullin situation is a bit like JT3. If Louie is The Godfather of SJU hoops, CM is his son. Then add that he’s the best player to ever wear a Johnnie’s uniform and a HOFer. I think that gets him a longer rope than anyone else would be given. So to answer if SJU misses the tourney I still think he keeps his job. Not to sound disrespectful but it’s not like SJU has been a perrenial SW16 team that has stumbled under Mullin. The program has stumbled for 20+ years more or less. If Mullin stays maybe he needs a very strong veteran asst coach. Paging Larry Brown...or someone like him. Might not be a long term solution but probably what’s best for the program.

Depends on the way you guys schedule. If the AD is in charge of that and you guys go 8-10 9-9 10-8 but miss the tournament then yes absolutely he should get another year. If he's the one in charge of scheduling and just can't comprehend that modern scheduling means challenging yourself then he should be asked to resign, can't alienate your programs GOAT

Fire the bum...and take Mac with him. If he can't make a RS championship, a BET, or the dance with all the talent on this Johnnies team. Fire the bum.

SJU has improved every season under Mullin.

Mullin is nearing the end of his contract and would need to either be let go or extended after this year.

Apparently, GSJ made the schedule and Mullin approved. Stupid schedule, but since we got incredibly lucky and went 12-0 it won't keep us out of the Tournament. What's troubling is our Big East performance to date. That is far more indicative of how good we actually are. Going 10-8 should be automatic with this roster, but that seems unlikely.

Considering where we started year 1... 1-17 in the BE with a dreadful OOC, that's not saying anything. Believe we had 6 wins total. This team hasn't even made the NIT in 3 years, so "improving" is nonsense. Reality is that so far Mullin hasn't been nearly as good as Lavin, who actually did make the NIT/NCAA nearly every year. Why shouldn't we have standards remotely similar to anybody else in the Big East (besides DePaul)? IF we don't make the Tournament, at least 8 fan bases on here would not want a coach like Mullin as their own. We shouldn't either.

Further, the main reason we're improving is because of Ponds. What happens next year when he's gone? We got a taste against DePaul last week.

I am 100% in favor of dropping Mullin, GSJ, and Mitch if we don't make the Tournament. Matt would be the only one I'd keep. I'm pretty sure Mullin would step down if that were to happen.

If we don't make the Tournament this year I won't mind, as long as we get a new staff immediately. Gotta look at the next 5 years and ask if Mullin has done enough for an extension.

I love how you think going 12-0 OOC won't keep you out of the tournament.

Sorry, but a Big East team that goes 21-10 should be an absolute no brainer in making the tourney. Therefore your OOC could easily keep you out of the tourney. If you can't go 9-9 in conference play and make the tourney, your OOC kept you out of the tourney. This would be 2nd time in 6 years that St John's would miss the tourney due to OOC, they did also in 2014....

the roster also plays a role when considering a coaching change. they lose Ponds and Clark. they get back Simon, Heron (maybe), and Figueroa. I understand Eli Wright has good upside. so does Caraher. no recruit of any significance. still lack in size. If they fail to make the tourney this year there's even less chance they make it next year.

Considering all that, I wouldn't be up in arms if he got fired. just don't do what Uconn did with Ollie. that's a mess.

Take this as a compliment: I believe your pedigree and advantages are such that this should not be going on - - at all.

I know stuff happens and there are never guaranties of success in anything, and this particular predicament shows just how important having a great coaching staff is to a program, but it just seems as though it's beyond time to get this fixed. I like Mullin. I think he's great for the Big East and presents a great story/narrative: a star that comes back from the old BE to help build and continue SJU in the current version of the conference.

At any rate, extend him. And let's hope St. Johns still makes the Dance this year and makes it to the second weekend.

During the upcoming annual meeting for the conference AD's, place scheduling strategy on the agenda. Have the entire conference abiding by guidelines if members aren't doing so already (I would think that Val and company would have this issue under control).

Seems to me like Mullin was hired to land recruits and bring back some fan enthusiasm. I guess he's done OK at that. From what I see there's apparently some other guy running huddles and drawing up plays, if the Johnnies aren't getting it done on the court, I'd fire that guy.
