Props To SJU Against Nova

Postby ChestRockwell85 » Fri Feb 22, 2019 11:36 am

I was at the game last Sunday and SJU's great comeback aside, MSG was packed and loud. In the past I have been critical about SJU's student section, my apologies, but even the students were there on their feet, chanting, and really getting into it. Usually at these games MSG is about 40 to 50% Nova fans, at this game it felt like 70% St. John's fans.

Anyway, props to SJU, not just on the win, but for packing the hell out of MSG, being loud, and making this really feel like an old school Big East showdown. I haven't been in at atmosphere like that in awhile at a Big East game. It was nice to have back. Hoping it continues!

Congrats!

The atmosphere was unreal. And it doesn’t happen unless St. John’s was hosting such a successful and big time program that the fans wanted to see SJU take down. Nova brings excitement to the fan base because of their great success and everyone in the big east is very lucky to have them.

Just imagining whether you were on one knee or both while "glorifying" Nova. Yes, thanks a million to Fr Donahue & Jay for annually coming to town and kicking our asses - SO Grateful for your support to each of us and the conference.

I look forward to returning the favors. ;)

That’s a nice joke, but need I remind you that it has nothing to do with nova beating teams in the conference. Creighton can’t win in the tournament. SJU can’t even get there. Georgetown has been struggling too. Xavier, other than one run, hasn’t had the success they would like in March. Marquette has their best opportunity this year. Providence has done a good job getting there but hasn’t advanced much. DePaul, Same as St. John’s.. Seton hall is another team that has gotten there but struggled, a lot of times due to seeding. Butler has been decent.

Where would the perception of this conference be if Villanova didn’t win two national championships against the ACC and Big Ten’s finest? I don’t really know and I don’t want to know.

Saying the big east is lucky to have nova is a massive understatement

You're not wrong, but people always seem to forget Matt Stainbrook taking us to the sweet sixteen and nearly knocking off zona in 2015

Part of the "problem" for the league in the tournament is what makes it so much fun during the regular season. In the 5 years of the league- had only 13 teams finishing with more than 10 wins. It will be almost guaranteed being only 15 teams after this year, so only 2.5 teams per year. Of those 15, 4 won 12 games and 1 won 11 games. So only 10 teams in 6 years with more than 12 wins(assuming both Nova and Marquette get 2 more wins). Very tough to get good seeds in the NCAA tourney with a lot of conference losses. Prior to this year, every single team who gets at least 14 conference wins has gotten at least a 3 seed. With 4 1 seeds and 3 2 seeds.

Parity and beating the holy hell out of each other is aweseome for the regular season. But you wind up with a lot of 10-8 and 9-9 teams(if not worse), and if they get in the tourney, they're going to be in those 7-10 pit of misery way more often than not.

Absolutely true. Unfortunately that damn Wisconsin buzzer beater always sticks out in my head. I’m not even an X fan but I still am mad about that one. Seeing sumner afterwards killed me

yea that was disappointing. that charge on sumner on our last possession was bs. i think that team might've better than last year's.

Its never 50% nova or any other fans besides Cuse. It's usually like 25% tops

I haven't been a St. John's fan for very long (around 7 years- I applied for grad school during Lavin's second year), but I can say that the St. John's vs Nova game was my favorite ever basketball game to attend. For Villanova that type of a win would be routine, but for a team like St. John's with so little to celebrate, it was pretty much a dream win. A 100% full MSG, the defending National Champs, the 3/4 court shot, the massive comeback, etc. Most importantly, unlike our big wins vs Syracuse and Duke in previous years, this year we're actually in line for a bid! Doesn't get any better than that.

Props to Villanova for making the game/atmosphere possible. Not only have they attained blue blood status this past year, but they've also remained nationally relevant during a rebuilding year. Had Nova not taken such a massive step, Sunday would've been just another quality win rather than one to remember for a long, long time.

I look forward to a BET rematch. :)
