Big East Tournament

Postby sju88grad » Tue Feb 26, 2019 4:15 pm

We're only 2 weeks (and a day) away from the start of the Big East tournament. The possible seeding/match ups will probably change daily due to the teams bunched up in 3rd through 10th place. A few notable items:

1) Marquette will wrap up the #1 seed with a win over Villanova tomorrow night. If that happens, the two schools could end up tied for the regular season title with 13-5 records (if Nova wins out and Marquette loses out) but Marquette would get the #1 seed based on a season sweep of Villanova.

2) Villanova can wrap up at least the #2 seed with one more win in their final 3 games. The only way SJU could get the #2 seed is by winning their remaining 3 games and Villanova losing their last 3 games.

3) Trying to figure out anything else makes my head hurt.

This upcoming Big East Tournament may be the biggest coin flip of a conference tournament I have ever seen in a power conference. X has made major strides here coming into the final stretch. Providence, if they could just get to the 6 seed and have SJU be the 3 seed, they could get to the semifinals because for whatever reason they become Duke when playing St. John's and St. John's becomes Niagara.

Nova/Marquette, two top seeds could both obviously win. St John's and Georgetown look great some nights and look terrible on others, they could win or lose to anyone.

Seton Hall, Butler, same with them.

Creighton could get hot from 3 and who knows. Even DePaul has shown flashes this year.

Going to be insane

Best scenario for the league would be seton hall beating Marquette and then losing to anyone other than nova or st.johns in the championship.

Golden Power Points literally had me laughing out loud. For those who don't know (assuming that includes all non-Marquette fans) Cuonzo Martin had the Marquette job locked up until Wojo came in and gave an enthusiastic and ridiculously detailed 5 year powerpoint presentation on how he would turn MU into BE champion contenders and perennial NCAA high seeds. During the early years of Wojo's tenure, when Marquette was struggling, detractors referred to it derisively as the "Golden Powerpoint."
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I was sure.... like 100%.... bet the mortgage sure... that DePaul wouldn’t be the 10 seed this year at MSG.

Can anyone loan me a few bucks?

so looking...
Marquette controls their own destiny for 1 seed. If they win out, they are the #1 seed.
Georgetown controls their own destiny for 3 seed. If they win @ DePaul and @ Marquette, they will be the 3 seed now no matter what.

That's about the only things that are crystal clear right now.

UPDATE- 2018-19 Oscar's Big East League (fantasy)

In the 1st of 2 Playoff rounds (1/4, 2/3), the Hoyas face Beast and the Lightning face the Friars.

The top seeded Team Hoyasincebirth allowed the 4th seed Beast a opening Tuesday lead, but pounded the Beast team
throughout the remainder of the week. Baldwin, Marvin Clark, and Cain kept Beast close thru Thursday, but the Hoyas were
relentless with 8-1 leads. Beast had four players going Sunday but to no effect. Olujobi, Clark, and Ballock with good games, but Team Hoyasincebirth (87-49-8 WLT, 0 GB, 91 Pts)
cruised to victory, 9-0. Overwhelming margins in points 166 to 119, rebounds 50 to 37, assists 23 to 17, stl 12 to 11, blk 7 to 1. Strus was the
sole Hoya playing on Sunday and had a career day with 43 pts and 4 rebounds. Ballock is still playing for the Beast, but will have no effect on the outcome.

In the other matchup 2 seed Hutia-Lightning (90-53-1 WLT, 0.5 GB, 90.5 Pts) had an up and down affair with 3 seed Scary Friars. 9-0, 7-2, 5-4, 8-0-1.
Entering Sunday the Lightning had a slight lead in all categories. Friars HERON and FIGUEROA tried to close the gap on Sunday, to no avail. The Lightning still lead 8-0-1,
with 2 lightning players (Alexander and Hauser) still playing. The tilt finished with the Ltng winning 9-0. Ltng margins - points 100 to 83, rebounds 51 to 26, assists 19 to 11,
stl 5 to 3, blk 5 to 0.

Playoff Finals - 2018-19 Oscar's BE League

#1 Team Hoyasincebirth (87-49-8 WLT, 0 GB, 91 Pts) VS #2 Hutia-Lightning (90-53-1 WLT, 0.5 GB, 90.5 Pts)

Though both the Hoyas and the Ltng held the top spot in the league for several weeks each, the Hoyas closed strongly and continue to excel on the court. The Ltng,
who had dropped all the way to 4th as recent as 4 weeks ago, also finished strong. Should be an excellent matchup. The top seeded Team Hoyasincebirth
should be the overwhelming favorite to take the championship this coming week.
