Willard is going to get poached at some point. He's made it to the dance 4 years in a row now. If he does it again this year, I think you'll see some programs sniffing around. Watch Capel at Pitt, if they don't take a step forward next year, I could see Willard going 'home'.

Willard is going to get poached at some point. He's made it to the dance 4 years in a row now. If he does it again this year, I think you'll see some programs sniffing around. Watch Capel at Pitt, if they don't take a step forward next year, I could see Willard going 'home'.

Pitt is not going to fire Capel after two years. Kevin Stallings was a very unpopular hire to begin with, and was an abject disaster. Capel is neither, and will get five years. Willard can afford to be patient as he's in a good spot, but yeah, if he continues to win, I expect he'll get a big money offer from a better place than VT, and will be gone.

Jon Rothstein is reporting that Willard is the primary target for VT.

Though I'm a VT alum and can accept we're not in the upper echelon of the college basketball pecking order, I think you underestimate the kind of money VT will offer Willard. Wouldn't shock me to see us offer him a salary that would put his pay in the top half of the conference. It's still an ACC job and he can make a lot of money at VT and then parlay the VT job into a better one with some success.

I'm more realistic than most Hokie fans I've seen on the internet it seems, but I'm ok with VT being a stepping stone job as long as we attract quality candidates who keep the program competitive in the ACC.

Well now there's some legitimate VT wants Willard rumors. They can certainly throw around enough cash to make things interesting, but I'd still bet on Willard turning them down to remain at the Hall for now. He's a loyal guy and from everything I've heard, he's very happy and comfortable where he is now. He feels especially loyal to Myles Powell, so I think it would be especially difficult for him to leave right before Powell's senior season.

The big down side here though, is that if Willard does leave - Powell suddenly becomes much less of a lock to return for his senior year.

*Edit - another thing I'll add is that Willard has incredible job security right now. He'd get more immediate money from VT, but would need to prove himself all over again or risk losing his job. On the other hand, things would really have to go off the rails at SHU for him to have any shot at getting fired in the near future.

I would imagine higher-prestige jobs than Virginia Tech will open up for him in the near future. If he's looking at the ACC, then something like Miami of Fla with Larranaga at 70 could open soon, and would be more appealing than coaching in a remote area of Virginia.

I don't think long term Miami is a better job than Virginia Tech though. Va Tech you have good access to the DMV recruiting area.
