So they're essentially saying he transferred twice (I guess he technically did) and thus needs to sit twice even though he never suited up for CSU?

Sounds that way, which is the rule. Did someone at SJU inform him that he wouldn't have to sit if he transferred there? Maybe the rule isn't fair, but it seems pretty clear as far as a rule goes that if you transfer you have to sit a year.

The coach he committed to was fired several months ago before the season started, and now the AD who fired his coach is making it so he'll lose a year of eligibility and have to sit on the bench for 2 years. Dunn didn't transfer until after his coach was fired, despite most of his teammates transferring before (which led to his firing). This is the most messed up ruling of the year. St. John's and Dunn are getting completely screwed over, especially when you look at how the other transfer rulings have went.

Based on the facts we know and trying to give the NCAA the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps the initial evaluation has to be 100% by the rules and only on appeal can they use their common sense. By the letter of the law he's transferring from one school to another so by the law he has to sit out a year in residence. AKA a year at the school he hopes to play for. By the letter of the law the ruling is correct. But with common sense it seems horribly cruel to make a kid sit out another year and lose a year of eligibility.

That being said by the letter of the law the NCAA is just following their own rules and enforcing them appropriately. There's nothing in the rule that takes into account if the person played the year before or not as far as I know. Perhaps Dunn (and St. John's) should've done his homework better on the transfer rules and realized this was a legit possibility based on the rules. He probably would've been better going JUCO or DII/III.

Again common sense should prevail and hopefully on appeal he gets elligible.

The NCAA doesn't operate on facts. They will always do what is best for their bottom line. If enough people throw a stink they will cave like they always do to avoid bad press.

HBO Real Sports has a great commentary by Bryant Gumbel this month on what Title IX really is : unpaid (and under educated) poor urban and southern kids playing a violent sport that makes billions to subsidize rich white kids sports like lacrosse and softball.

Seems like a convoluted interpretation. The men's country club sports are also subsidized by the revenue sports, but that's not a result of title ix. title ix has actually eliminated some of what i'm sure gumbel would consider "rich, white" sports. Xavier had a dominant rifle team that had to be eliminated for instance.

also, a lot of those sports cost almost nothing to the school to field a team. the expenses are generally extremely low. just seems like a racially spiteful interpretation to some extent. frequently, athletic departments operate at a deficit from the expenses accrued by costly football programs and that debt is made up by charging higher student fees to what is normally a majority white student body.
