It seems like a lot of C7 fans care more about Big East titles in and of themselves than fans of the newer schools. I know they're more invested in that history, especially the fans of programs who have been there before the '00s, but it just seems rather regional to me. The exception to this historical regionalism seems to be a decent proportion of the Nova fans who say the two choices are about the same or they prefer the regular season championship. That's likely because they have actively and recently experienced how their regular season performances have led to 1 seeds and 2 seeds en masse, which has set them up well so that on two occasions they have won the championship.

Eh, I'm of the school that if you're good enough to win a national title you should be able to do it whether you're on the 1-line or the 3-line. You gotta play everyone eventually. Give me as many (real) trophies as possible.

The scenario set up here has no guarantees of only being two seeds lower. Seton Hall won and still was only a 6 seed despite a good season (1st and 2nd that year were 2 seeds). Providence won and was only an 11 seed (1st and 2nd were 2 and 3 seeds). The question is whether you prefer the regular season championship or the tournament championship, no conditions included. If Xavier wins the BET this year, I still would have preferred to be one of the top 3 regular season teams this season.

If we are attaching conditions, we are moving away from the initial question. I already said I would take 2nd place + a BET championship. This year, I would take 3rd place + a BET championship. Some years, I would not take 3rd place + a BET championship, but other years (e.g. 2017) would be better.

Regular season is just the 1 seed for the BET.

when Gtown "won" the big east regular season in 2013 it sure as shit didn't feel like anything when in they lost in the BET semifinals.

Maybe if you went on a run that year in the dance instead of bombing out in the 1st round as a #2 seed(at WFC in Philly) to the dunk city Florida Gulf Coast team, you'd remember it more fondly.

Well, that's sort of the thing, isn't it? A regular season "title" isn't actually anything by itself.

Except it got them a #2 seed in Philly. Still got win the games, but I'd rather be a #2 seed than a #7, that means something believe or not.

Weird that they didnt hang "#2 seed in Philly" banner. There's no implied national championship with a regular season "title", and a Big East Championship doesn't come handcuffed to a 9-seed either. Minimum of 15 teams get a top-4 tournament seed and walk away with nothing to show for it. Conference championship means something.

So do regular season titles(again ask Louisville if the BE RS isn't important), is it mid-major thinking to call your regular season champion a mid-major accomplishment? Obviously the correct answer is both titles(something we know a little bit about). I've done the research, I could list all the BET champs and how they fared in the NCAA, it's hit and miss as well. If the ultimate goal is NCAA glory, then getting the best seed possible is very conducive to achieving that and the best way to get a good seed? You guessed it, win the RS title.

Exactly. In the Big East, a regular season championship generally nets a team a protected seed, 1 through 4, with a 6 seed last year being the extreme example. You've already marked down as winning most of your conference games, so the seed variability is mostly based on OOC performance. A tournament championship could easily net anything between a 1 seed and a 9 seed, with an 11 seed in 2014 being the extreme example, because it's dependent on how you did during the entire regular season. If you told me my team would have a top 3-4 seed, regardless, I'd probably pick the tournament championship over the regular season championship, but for the general no-context question of which one do you pick, you can't guarantee that seeding.

No team has a great chance of winning the national championship, because it's single-elimination chaos. Some teams, though, can at least set themselves up with an okay chance, and I want my team to maximize the number of times that they have an okay chance.

If I had to pick one that Creighton would aim for every season, its the regular season title. Likely a high seed and higher chance of success in the NCAA tournament.

That said, there is no official designation on who is the "true" champ, or is there? Is it written in the Big East's history books somewhere, "the tourney champ is the real champ".

What a dumb argument. Why not just skip the regular season games with forfeits and prep for MSG in March?

Stupid on steroids.
