Agreed. How on earth is this possible?

I think they've got a couple of things going for them at the moment.
1. Facilities - Wintrust Arena is a huge step forward for the program. It's first class in nearly every way. And if the few times it's come close to being filled, the place rocks.
2. Player Development - Assistant Coach Tim Anderson is worth every dollar DePaul is paying him, and then some. For those who don't know, Anderson is one of the best basketball trainers in the country. His company's website claims that he's trained upwards of 60 NBA players, including the likes of Anthony Davis, Derrick Rose, and Jabari Parker. You better believe that part of DePaul's pitch to kids right now is that pros pay thousands of dollars to work with Anderson during the summer, and that if they come to DePaul, they'll get him every day in practice for free. And now they can point to the likes of Max Strus and Paul Reed as guys that nobody wanted who they put in the NBA.
3. Opportunity - It's the only good part about finishing last. You get to sell kids on the idea that they have a realistic chance to play right away. "Yeah, other schools will help you improve as well, but realistically, you're not going to play as much there as you would at DePaul."

All of College Basketball for most of the last 20-30 years: "DePaul can't compete unless they build a new arena."
DePaul spends $75 million to build a palace in the heart of downtown Chicago.
All of College Basketball for most the last 24 months: "How is DePaul recruiting so well? They must be cheating."
