Am I the only one who views this differently than I ever have? When I think of rivals, there's a hatred involved. I can't bring myself to root for Wichita or Southern Illinois at all...for/in anything. Losing to them made me mad for days. But this whole conference is made up of teams that are too alike to have hatred like that. In a way hating another school is like hating what you are because of that similarity. To me this is more like a group of brothers. You'll compete like crazy because you don't want to lose to any of them, but you'll always be pulling for them against anyone else. You can make fun of your brothers but an outsider better be ready to rumble if they want to make fun of one of them. Time might change that, but right now I can't muster the level of hate needed to call anyone a rival in the sense of what I've always considered a rival.

There are hated rivals and there are respected rivals. Personally, my rivalries have more to do with the student athletes and their coaching staffs. Thus my rivals tend to be ones I respect. If you get into the online fanbases where a few people get carried away, then you can get into that other kind of rivalry.

Good way of putting it. I respect Georgetown, we hate St. Joes. Although I'd rather see a Big 5 team win if the other team doesn't matter...

Yeah I don't hate anyone in our conference - I'm sure I could grow to hate you guys but for now its mostly love or pity (DePaul).

I remember when this board first started up, but I only recently joined after someone came over on the MU board reminding us of its existence. So I'm new here and I thought about starting this thread, but thought "someone had to have started this already."

So, bump.

In a non-Big East Big East rivalry, how about Saint Louis and UConn fans?

Looking forward to Xavier/Georgetown probably most of all for my Big East team (X). I think Xavier/Butler will be the long-term rivalry though.

If the Atlantic 10 didn't suck, why is everyone looking for the exits?
There is a reason why the A-10 left a team in the Central Time Zone...SLU, your move.

Butler and X is already established, but I definitely think the potential is there for some great rivalries between all of the western schools (Creighton, Marq, Butler, X and DePaul)

I took the easy route with Butler. Marquette/X will be interesting as well. This is one area the 10 team schedule really, really helps.

IMO, rivalries are defined by one thing: consistently close games. Games are consisently close and everyone starts to form expectations that all games will be that way and, in a way, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

With Notre Dame gone, I don't know who MU's rival is/will be. The fact that I'm struggling to think of one shows that we really don't have one.

We had two very close games against Butler last year, but with Stevens gone, Im not sure it'll be as competitive (at least in the short-term). I hope Im wrong on that.

Otherwise, we've had some pretty close games against SJU. Jimmy Butler's buzzer-beater at the Carnesecca. Eliminating SJU in the BE tourney a couple yrs ago. Oh, and the buzzer-beater last year to clinch a share of the BE "regular season" "title" (does air quotes). Plus, Lavin reminds me of Crean. SJU as a rival? Any takers?

I honestly thought Marquette/Depaul would have taken off post C-USA. If SLU were to get in at some point, I have zero doubt it would be Marquette first, second, and third.
