Sources: Euros heading to Fox Sports through 2028
Fox Sports is close to taking the UEFA European Championship rights from ESPN, according to several sources. Nothing has been signed officially yet, but sources expect a deal for U.S. rights to be announced within the next two weeks. ESPN has held these rights since 2008 and has built up the Euros into a jewel event. Deal terms still are being negotiated, but sources say that Fox will have the rights through 2028, which would include Euro 2024 and Euro 2028, in addition to the UEFA Nations League and European qualifiers.

The price Fox is paying for the package is not known. ESPN paid around $115 million for the package that included just Euro 2020. UEFA was believed to be looking for around $300 million to cover the next two iterations of the event.

The deal marks a big win for Fox, as the Euros fit the media company’s soccer strategy, which is more focused on big events with national teams rather than individual clubs. Fox boasts an enviable schedule over the next four years, which includes the FIFA World Cup next year, the Women’s World Cup in 2023, the Euro 2024 and the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2025. It also holds the rights to the South America's Copa America.

CBS, ESPN and NBC were involved in the negotiations at one point or another. These media companies have been active in picking up soccer rights, part of a strategy by each to bolster the direct-to-consumer component for their respective streaming services: Paramount+, ESPN+ and Peacock.

Jesus, that rivals World Series numbers. Are college sports bigger than professional?

ESPN is paying $470 million just for the rights for the CFP. I wonder how many billions are paid just for the P5 tv rights every year. Quick review of the tv deals adds up to about 4 billion in tv rights for the P5. Roughly 80 P5 schools, 10 ball scholarships, 50 football. About 800k per scholarship athlete. Assuming the usual 50/50 split of other sports leagues means the average player is missing out at a minimum of 400k a year.

World Series? Bad comparison, baseball is a dying “past time” and as fun as watching a guy adjust his cup and spit (oh... wait that’s actually what it is). Soccer, MLS SOCCER now has almost as many fans.

LOL! Couldn’t agree more…..baseball is a snoozer….I’ve got season tickets to LAFC and the experience is phenomenal. While it’s not European level, it’s still a good product. Fans are great….

Silly argument that's only based on the World Series TV ratings trend over the past several decades. Yes, MLB has become much more of a regional game over the past few decades as there are far more entertainment options available, and yes it isn't as watchable when your own team isn't playing. Personally, I'm still a huge fan of my team (go Braves), but I very, very rarely tune in to other games anymore.

MLB revenue:
2019 (last full season): $10.3 billion - 10X that of MLS
2009: $5.9 billion

https://www.statista.com/statistics/193 ... ince-2005/

Nice increases every year.

But hey, let's look at the finals ratings anyways...

Finals ratings (2021):

NFL: 96.4 million (SB)

MLB: 14.3 million (game 6)
NBA: 12.5 million (game 6)

NHL: 3.6 million (game 5)
MLS: 1.0 million (2020- 2021 happens in December)

I'm not saying that MLS won't be more popular than MLB many years from now, that's possible. But for now the sport is mostly irrelevant. It's not anywhere close to MLB in popularity.

In terms on TV ratings NFL & college football are #1 & #2.

Ohio State-Michigan capped a milestone year for the FOX “Big Noon Saturday” window, which averaged 5.76 million viewers — up 13% from 2019 (5.11M) and the top college football window on any network. This is the first time that FOX has aired the highest rated college football window, a distinction that had previously been the exclusive domain of the SEC on CBS or ABC’s Saturday Night Football.

Overall, FOX averaged 3.90 million viewers for college football games during the regular season, up 5% from ’19 (3.73M) and its most-watched season yet.
