Native American Mascots/Nicknames in the BE

All this talk of the Redskins and what not got me thinking about what you guys think about the whole issue. Would Marquette and St. Johns fans prefer to still be the Warriors and Redmen or is it a non issue? If those are offensive names what about Fighting Irish or Spartans? Just curious about what the general feeling is around here.

Personally I think something like Redskins is a little insensitive but I have no problem with a generic warrior or fighting illini (Illinois fan here)

I think most fans wish MU were still the Warriors. Such a cool name and logo.

I was a kid when they switched to the Golden eagles. I think warriors is better, but its not too big of a deal to me.

Its typically older alums who care the most. They are so devout, some even refuse to buy anything that says golden eagles or has the bird on it. I think the bird logo is childish, but i dont mind the golden eagles name.

Theyve already explored going back to warriors back in 05 (06?). School admins say they toyed with the idea of bringing back warriors without use of native american imagery, but said they realized its impossible. Changed the name to gold for a few days. Were flogged by alums, who reluctantly, but happily, went back to golden eagles.

I still call them the Warriors.

I know the Illini and FSU have gotten permission from the relevant tribes, but the NCAA still has a freaking fit about it. Because that's the biggest problem in college athletics.
Big East Basketball is what it's always been. Great competition nightly.
If the Atlantic 10 didn't suck, why is everyone looking for the exits?
There is a reason why the A-10 left a team in the Central Time Zone...SLU, your move.

I work at the phone a thon to ask for money from alums and more than one has spazzed out at me about the Warrior nickname change and said they won't give until it's changed back. I understand loyalty to your mascot but the name on the front of the jersey is Marquette not Warriors so I don't understand why they care THAT much. But I like Warriors over Golden Eagles and our old Football name the Golden Avalanche over anything.

So true, one of the St. John's message board sites is "Redmen.com" that pretty much sums it up

Warriors forever!!

my dream is the warrior name with the monogram. maybe if we need to a St joan of arc logo we do have the actual chapel she prayed at on campus.

"Queen of victory, pray for us."

I entered Marquette when Warriors was already gone a some years. I just wish people would let it go and don't know (m)any personally that care. It's a nice bit of trivia, but it isn't coming back. When you see students in Warriors gear on national tv, it reflects poorly on the university, in my opinion. This was labeled as racist whether you agree ot not, so when you fight for it you risk coming across as supporting a 'racist' label.

...now that logo change with the Golden Eagles, greatly prefer the old one! This blasted Warriors fight got us mocked with Gold and downgraded our logo. Good going, people, keep beating that dead horse.

The Redskins and Indians should change. Both are pretty bad. I can't believe Cleveland still has that Chief Wahoo hat. Cleveland was informally called the "Naps" after Nap Lajoie of Woonsocket, so they could return to that or go with the "Fellers" or similar.

Dartmouth for one made an easy switch to the "Big Green" from the Indians.
St John's could easily just go with "Johnnies". I think when they still had "Redmen" we would refer to them the "Johnnies" more often anyway. "Redmen" is pretty bad I think.
Curious about Marquette-- I figured they could go with "Blue and Gold" as a nickname, but someone here said they tried just "Gold" and it was hated. What about the "McGuires" or a reference to him in some way? Also, I never of Avalanche with Marquette... also, did the "Eagles" nickname have any historic reference to Marquette, or was it just picked all at once?

So I think the Dartmouth solution is the way to go. If "Friars" came under fire, I'd think the "Black and White" might be a nickname leader because informally it's used already by fans, like "Chukwu committed to the Black and White", or "the Black and White open vs Minnesota State on October 11th..."
