Outsider Perspectives on Mike Anderson

Hey guys just curious what you guys think who are not SJ fans. I think his poor recruiting was always a major concern from day 1 but then he found Champ & Posh as diamonds in rough, so it bought him some time. Last yr we almost make tourney in a surprisingly solid year. Huge turnover in offseason, then we bring in what appeared to be upgrades and way more size & depth. Champ announced he was back and so was Posh. Expectations were huge and some national pundits even had us in their top 30 preseason poll with most expecting an NCAA appearance. Fast forward and we have completely collapsed with 0 good wins and our only wins are against joke teams. Champ is gone next year and who knows if we have another mass exodus. So next year is probably a stinker.

I think I was patient with him through last year and I was super excited going into this season. It was supposed to be our best team since maybe the late 90's. Or at least 2011. We are now well over 100 NET and I just don't see Anderson being the guy to get us back on track. I'm pretty much done with him at this point.

I think he's going to have to hit the transfer portal hard TBH. Think his style would be attractive to players in that.

Think he's locked in for sure for another 3-4 years no matter what. Did a 6 year extension after last season.

Yup, he's going to be there for a while so might as well get used to it. The Big East is a tough conference and there are only so many spots at the top. Right now, Jay Wright, Willard, Cooley, Hurley and McDermott you know will always have their teams fighting at the top. Steele and Shaka might be joining those ranks but who are they going to displace? Anderson is a solid coach but it's hard to be in the upper half of this conference, just the way it is with only 11 members and the home and home schedule.

He initially struck me as a high floor low ceiling hire. I don't think SJU is that bad this year, the weak OOC schedule just really didn't prepare them for Big East play this year.

yeah and then the pause didn't help them out at all.

I don't really have an opinion, but he seemed like a pretty nice pickup at the time. I wonder who you think would be better? Don't tell me Pitino.

I remember thinking it was a strange hire given Anderson's Southern coaching roots and lack of familiarity with NY/the Northeast. It could simply be another case of good coach, but bad fit.

He's only been there 3 years, and those 3 years have been some of the wildest years in CBB history between COVID and the transfer portal and the NIL. So far, not great, but St. John's has been mostly a middling program for 20 years. Anderson hasn't been significantly better or worse than what SJU has been for a while now.

I think he needs more time, but I understand why Johnnies fans would be impatient.
