Matt Brown highlighted this, but some concern for our next TV deal is absolutely impacted by the new Big 12 TV deal. FOX has acquired more content (and TV slots) for not just football but also basketball for the Big 12. FOX has also acquired significantly more B1G games (football and basketball). Between Fox, FS1 and FS2, there are only so many windows to pay for and go around.

I think a split TV deal is more likely than ever right now.

Right, and FS2 is hardly a viable option- don't think any Big Ten games are allowed to be on that.

Totally agree with you on the split package.

Matt Brown math is off.
Big Ten is now 39 games on FOX/FS1. New TV deal only goes up to 45'ish. That is NOT "significantly more"
FOX/FS1 will lose (we think) the Pac-12. That is 22 basketball games.
MWC is 32 games on FS1.

We don't have a number for Big 12 games on FOX/FS1. My guess is 30.

For the “A” package, ESPN gets the top four football picks each season, six of the top eight picks, eight of the top 12 picks and 12 of the top 20 picks. As part of the deal, ESPN also gets the rights to the Big 12 football championship game and the basketball tournament championship game. The Big 12’s parity helped convince Fox, whose package includes 26 football games per season that will run on Fox broadcast network and FS1, to do the deal.

If their basketball agreement mirrors their football one then their Big 12 deal may put many of the top matchups on ESPN. Even if it doesn't, I think the Big East can compete for air time. The new Big 12 is taking a pretty big hit basketball wise losing Oklahoma and Texas. UC, BYU, UCF and Houston are no slouches but they aren't the brands OU and Texas are.

by the ratings, it's actually a better conference. And with 1 extra conference game every single rotation, and think they're going to 20 conference games. So instead of 90 conference games up to 120 conference games(even if they stick with 18 conference games it's up to 108). A split package is still going to have a lot of really good games.

Basically for football, ESPN gets top 4 games, then after that is a pure 50/50 split.

It hurts SHU as we'll sink like a rock in this new age of college basketball, but reality is we can't compete with the Creightons of the world offering kids 6 figures to transfer anyway. The Big East needs to find more schools who can. Past or even current basketball success doesn't matter anymore, the schools with the most money (or at least willing to spend the most money) will rise to the top.

True, without the black market SHU will miss on kids like Isiah Whitehead now.

Lol if Whitehead was just going to the highest bidder SHU would've been nowhere near the conversation. Not saying they play the game any less than X and everyone else, just that they simply don't have the cash to compete in a world where it's criteria #1.

None of our coaches had an assistant go to federal prison taking the fall for him though.

I think the Big 12 will ultimately have stronger metrics, on average, even without Texas and Oklahoma moving forward. Cincinnati and Houston are very strong and consistent programs, and BYU is a great addition as well (UCF, even if they are regularly 10/12th - 12/14th, is worth it for their access to Florida; it's no different than the Big East adding USF from 2005-2013). I think we will continue to surpass the PAC, and think we *should* have better results than the SEC, but the SEC continues to invest heavily into men's basketball that I think that will, at some point, they too will pull ahead. It will be the B1G, ACC, Big 12, SEC, Big East and PAC (until it gets raided again) as the top-6 leagues. The ACC will inevitably get raided significantly too in about ten years, so they will drop too.

The Big East, IMO, will continue to be expected to drop-off and/or underperform in the upcoming years (between Wright retiring and no other program advancing to a Final Four). It will be, once again, terrific and added fuel for our league to utilize, as we play well as the underdogs.

Regardless of who we end up with (FOX, ESPN, CBS, NBC, Amazon, Disney or HGTV), it is imperative that we sign a short-term (~6 years) deal. We need to go to market again as there is more reshuffling. I think the odds are unfavorable of any other FBS team joining the Big East, but many said that about UConn. The Big East will remain an elite basketball brand with a terrific following. Looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

The BE Media Rights negotiations should begin in the summer of 2024 (1 year out) unless there is major movement during 2023 and early 2024. With the uptick in per-game value, thanks to the B1G,
I expect the BE per school payouts to rise to $9 Mill up to $11 Mill whether its one or 2 major players. I'd still like to see CBS or NBC in the mix. 3 media partners lessens the load on any one given partner and
these 3 (Fox, ESPN, CBS) split the pie well with the B1G.

There's no hurry to add any new member. I'm still waiting on the ACC GoR to fall. When it does and both the B1G & SEC will poach who they want, Leaving my 3 looking for a lifeboat. ND will keep its football indy and park ==
all their other sports back in the BE. Duke and S'cuse will follow. The 3 shipwrecked ACC members add value and our number rises to 14 teams. The league's value will climb - potentially surpassing the $11 Mill mark.
If we only get Duke & S'cuse out of the ACC, we can always reach back for the Zags. Either way, the Big East wins!

Agree that Val & Co should be talking a 6-year deal, so we can look/re-evaluate again in 2031.

great point from both of you guys about the short term deal. Definitely makes sense to do that now, just like it made sense to do a 12 year deal back 10 years ago for stability.
