Cooley is aware of his mediocre tourney resume, and probably thinks he can do better at Georgetown. And I guess Georgetown feels that way, too. I don't know whether this is a grass looking greener situation, but most people feel very similarly about themselves.

Hey Friars fans, he got to the tournament (AGAIN!) with a roster of transfers and mostly supporting players who returned, a team not expected to do much this year. Ed Cooley is a GREAT coach! As an X fan, I have no dog in this fight, but I'd like to see him stay at PU.

But there's a financial mountain there -- PU being the smallest school in the BEAST and therefore (presumably) somewhat strapped for the cash needed to compete in the new NIL landscape of professional college sports -- so Ed might well move on to a university with deeper pockets. Doncha all hate what what's happening here? Has a Miami recruit really been signed to an NIL deal offering $5M plus for a four year commitment? Will the SEC and Big 10 soon have almost all of the top 20 football AND basketball teams??

The point isn't to discredit Cooley, it's just that taking a coach from your own conference is something so off-limits that it'd only be understandable if it were a really special coach (such as Jay Wright). Could Cooley become a championship winning (or at least Elite 8 level) coach at Georgetown? I guess it's possible (same with other candidates), but his current resume isn't elite by any means. People just give him an exaggerated amount of credit because PC has a small enrollment, but they're still a Big East team. Another issue is with UConn campaigning for a football invite it's not a good thing to destabilize our consistent New England team.

Also, PC I believe had the #1 transfer class this year. That's impressive in itself, but it's not like Cooley was coaching a bunch of 3 stars. He got some good players to the Tournament as one of the last teams in and lost.

If Pitino goes to St. John's, then I'd personally rank Cooley as exactly an average Big East coach (behind Smart, Pitino, McDermott, Miller, and Hurley).

I would put Cooley above Hurley on that list. UCONN has good players, but I feel they are held back by mediocre coaching.

No offense to Cooley, he's an excellent coach, but he has THREE Tournament wins since he started coaching in 2006. Georgetown is going after him like he's Bill Self. If he were Bill Self, then yeah I could maybe understand going this hard after another Big East team, but he's not.

I agree with your take. Cooley by all accounts is a great guy and entertaining to listen to but he has fallen below expectations in the NCAA tournament.

That's fair, but even if Cooley is 5th rather than 6th the point still stands. One spot above average is not worth it.

Also, this:

Ed Cooley could become the first intra-conference coaching change in Big East history.

"I don't think it's a good look for the Big East Conference at all."

Yikes! Shameful for both Cooley and Georgetown. Seems Cooley is almost certainly gone if PC's AD is saying this.

G'town President Jack DeGioio and John Thompson had a tight 40 year relationship and he is obsessed with "keeping it in the family". He views Cooley as like a son to Thompson. No Hoya fan wants DeGioio making the decision, but it is what it is. I like Cooley and his floor is desperately needed at G'town. Would much prefer they go all out for Shrewsberry though. If Providence gives him the NIL money he's after, I still think he stays a Friar.

From Rothstein:
Ed Cooley put his Rhode Island home on the market for sale this morning, per Zillow.

I agree. Wonder what names Providence would look at to replace Cooley if it goes down like it looks.

I'm back! Not that any of you knew i was gone. My take, he is gone. If he wants a change fine, can't fault him for that. He did a good job at PC and helped the program and city. There are over 300 D1 programs why go to one of the 10 that should be, unofficially, off limits? To make things worse he gives non answers all week, was on TV last night claiming his mind wasn't made up and hasn't received an official offer. TIP": If you want to pretend you aren't moving, wait more than 12 hours before you put your house up for sale. That might make you lies more believable.
He is also the highest paid coach in the BE and one of the top 15 in the country so it seems PC is willing to invest.
Hopefully PC goes for a name in their next hire

Never imagined the day where Providence fans despise Cooley more than Hurley.
