$6 million is not the second highest paid coach in the country and there are no rules that prohibit a coach or player from switching schools in conference. Be mad at Cooley all you want but complaining that the conference should "do something" about this is incredibly stupid.

Billyjack, I feel bad for you. Although these are heady days for Johnnies fans, that doesn't mean we don't feel compassion for one of our brethren getting the shaft. When we first started discussing this back in early February, the consensus seemed to be that Cooley would have too much loyalty and Georgetown too much integrity, for this to be a possibility. I've been around too long and have developed a well founded cynicism to know better. I remember when the snake Nordenberg at Pitt, convinced everyone to turn down ESPN's contract and play the market, while he was secretly negotiating with the ACC. And then the moron Cantor at Syracuse, started prematurely dancing on the Big East's grave, suggesting regular season games versus Duke and Carolina would be played at MSG, before Boeheim set her straight. Unfortunately integrity and loyalty to friends, seem to be relics from a distant era.

I am surprised Cooley didn't try for Notre Dame or a similar job. His returning to the Dunk and trying to beat Providence on their home court just doesn't seem right. I wish you guys had gone for Mack, I think he could have kept you at the same level without missing a beat. Anyway, I hate seeing a loyal fan base get treated this way.

You're probably in no mood for congratulations but you were right on the money with Shanley. The Pitino signing and Repole back likely never happens without his leadership. He''s already a rock star in my opinion. In fact losing him may turn out to be the far bigger loss, than losing Cooley.

It's just so incredibly rare for a coach to bolt for another program within a conference. Only a handful of examples I could find in football and basketball. Regardless, it appears that this process *should* be wrapped up in the next 24-48 hours.

Every AD in the back of their mind has a list of candidates in event an opening comes. So while Providence fans may feel jilted or hurt by Cooley going to Georgetown, Steve Napolillo should have a list of names ready to go.

The first calls that should have already taken place are to Pitino and Donovan. Both are long shots but both need to be asked. Pitino looks like NY or nothing at this point. Donovan might be looking to get out, but he's not taking a pay cut at this point either. He's making $6 million with the Bulls; Providence won't be able to pay that annually.

The next tier names could be Jeff Battle (if he doesn't join Cooley at Georgetown), Ryan Gomes (Overtime Elite), Tobin Anderson (Farleigh Dickinson), Ritchie McKay (Liberty), Richard Pitino (New Mexico), John Becker (Vermont) and Kim English (George Mason).

Someone like Richard would be interesting, although I'm not sure he and his Dad would want to coach against each other (I recall the Hurleys were reported as not wanting to coach against each other in conference a few years ago).

I would think someone like Battle would be early favorite, especially to keep current players from bolting.

Maybe Mitch Henderson should be added to that list.

They did during Covid, but I don’t know that they’re continuing that practice any more. Manhattan College fired their coach 2 weeks before the season. Their star guard, Jose Perez transferred to West Virginia, anticipating a waiver of the year of ineligibility in light of the unusual circumstances. But the NCAA balked and wouldn’t grant it. We’ll see what happens in these cases if the players try to follow the coach, but the problem for them is that there is a risk. The NCAA won’t give a decision in advance. So, they have to actually accomplish the transfer and then find out the verdict after the fact.
