Tweet from Pitino today...

Last time Pitino coached in Carnesecca Arena... 1987... huuuge win for us... Mark Jackson miss, ball off PC with 1 second remaining... Pitino runs our team off the court... idiot Tim Higgins ends game... Louie is pissed... we were on a 2 game losing streak and this was a big big win... Mike Gorman with Bill Raftery (!!!) on the TV call...

Here's the entire game...

https://youtu.be/PHcd2b5mH_I

Youtube full game, the intro in the first 90 seconds or so is hilarious... recap of PC-SJU game at the Dunk, reference to Marco Baldi, and Louie looks angry... at 1:14 is my least favorite highlight lol... enjoy...

at 1:55 please notice the (typical) location of eventual 5-time champion UConn (and PC in the early BE years) in the standings-- the incredible rise to power over the following 35 years by UConn began 3 seasons after this PC-SJU game... incredible.

Classic bruising late 80's Big East game... must-see action. SJU should paint their midcourt back in this style.

The setting lends to the drama... Friars running to the lockers thru some tiny door cuz they never scheduled us in the Garden... banner for "CBS radio", this was pre-WFAN existence/ Mike and the Mad Dog...

P.S. i could get WFAN on my evening commute home and listen to Mike/Mad Dog every time in the mid to late 90's, during those Yankee WS champs years with Torre, etc.

Pitino brings Daniss Jenkins along with him from Iona to St John's. About time they landed somebody. They need to score big in the portal

Nahiem Alleyne from UConn to St. John’s. Eligible right away as a grad student. He has 1 year of eligibility left.

He came off the bench this year for UConn, averaging 5 ppg in 18 mpg, but before that he was a 3-year starter for VA Tech where he averaged 10 ppg, shot 39% on 3’s and 81% on FTs for the 3 years combined. Pitino should be able to bring out the best in him. His 3-point shooting should be a good complement to Soriano’s inside game. Good get for St. John’s.

From Rothstein:
Rick Pitino says on MSG Network that St. John's will try and play every Big East game at MSG during the 2024-25 season.

Pitino also says that St. John's will play its Gavitt Games matchup during the upcoming year at MSG.

That would be awesome. Scheduling at MSG is always tricky with Knicks, Rangers, concerts, etc but hopefully with enough notice, they can get it done.

The league office needs to do whatever it takes to make sure every BE game is at the Garden. Play Mondays, Fridays, whatever, rather than waste one of the league's best resources.

Source: Five-Star prospect Mackenzie Mgbako will visit St. John's this weekend.

Mgbako initially committed to Duke. One of the top players in the 2023 class.

So far the players that Pitino has gotten are a little underwhelming, getting Mgbako would change things.
