Both Xavier and Butler will be Top 5 long term, in the short term they are arguably top 3 as far as the league's credibility goes

Based on the criteria of the first post, I can see how someone would put DePaul over Butler. It isn't asking who is going to be better in the coming years.

Butler has been a top 15 team 6 of the last 7 years, sitting at 14 right now and will move up Monday.

There's only 12-15 or so programs similar.

That's not a slight against Depaul. It is just exceedingly unlikely that whatever heights they accomplish would reach that sort of level.

I love Butler's program. I was at Marquette some of those years you guys were fighting Milwaukee and doubt you have to sell yourself to anybody in the city.

All I mean is based on the criteria in the first post it isn't too surprising someone might put DePaul above Butler.

Market: DePaul has Chicago.
NCAA success: DePaul with no specification on time, especially if you add that that many of their NIT bids were when it was strong.
History: Butler has some nice really early history, but I think DePaul would take this being a mainstay brand for so many years. Maybe call it a wash.
Recent success: Obviously, Butler

That's 2-1-1 for DePaul. It doesn't mean they really do have better value for the conference, but I can see someone putting them above Butler based on what the OP pointed to.

Based on what? Stop this re-writing of history. You've finished in the top 15 twice in AP since 2005-06. Relax. I put DePaul in front simply because if they ever could figure out Chicago recruiting they could return to their prominence in the 80s and early 90s - just like how SJU is still highly regarded in my ranking. They're also the largest Catholic university in the country with around 25k students. Yes, I put them high on potential value. But yeah, you're completely right, whatever success Butler has now will never go away, and whatever failure DePaul has been will continue in perpetuity so we should not consider it at all.

Yes that's fairly likely.

It's probable that the new programs that achieved greater success will acheive even greater given more ammo. The two have been superior without the built in advantages of being "high major". Hell, if you think about it, the C7 are going have to figure out how to operate with less as they operate with more.

But that's neither here nor there, everyone understands that the two are near the top of conference programs.

The initial post was mostly about how drastically far apart the programs are and for the record as someone who grew up in Chicago, no one will ever "bring" Chicago. College sports in the city are a footnote. If the Illini are doing anything, peoe will pay attention for a minute then its back to Bulls, Bears, and Cubs.

Listen to 670 the score a couple of days, see how much college sports resonance is there. (If you get Top 25 scores, that's a win)

That's a bit funny because DePaul not in a high major conference was also better than DePaul has been in a high major conference. They were doing fairly well in the years around their entrance to the Big East. Wainwright tanked them, the Big East just obliged.

EMT wrote:PC is better than Seton Hall and will be very improved next year without Ricky Ledo and could be very special with him. The Hall struggles financially to compete.

In 2010-2011 (last year available), SHU spent $6.8M on their men's basketball program. That ranked #22 in the nation.
Yes, approx $1.2M is for rent @ The Rock - but that still puts them above PC who have to pay rent @ The Dunk.
Hardly struggling, looks much more like a solid financial commitment to return to success.
Not that the Hall has been a paragon of success in the last 20 years, but Providence is one conference mate that they have stayed on top of.
"Next Year" is something I hear all the time.

The other potential teams in the new conference?
Marquette #4 @ $10.3M
G'Town #9 @ $8.6M
SHU #22 @ $6.8M
St. John's #25 @ $6.7M
Depaul #27 @ $6.5M
Villanova #28 @ $6.4M
Providence #42 @ $5.5M
Creighton #58 @ $4.8M
Richmond #74 @ $4M
Xavier #77 @ $3.9M
Dayton #79 @ $3.8M
Butler #87 @ $3.5M
VCU #93 @ $3.2M
St Louis #98 @ $3M

I think its a bit too easy for everyone to get mad with strict 1-12 rankings. It's easier to view this in tiers:

Tier 1:
Georgetown
St. John's
Villanova
Marquette

Tier 2:
Xavier
Butler
DePaul

Tier 3:
Creighton
Seton Hall
Providence
St. Louis

Tier 4:
Richmond
Dayton
