Brandon Austin transferring

Postby TheHall » Sat Jan 04, 2014 6:53 pm

" Providence freshman Brandon Austin -- widely touted as a huge commitment for the Friars -- will not be returning to the school following winter break....Rather than wait around, the Top-50 ranked freshman is leaving Providence to begin his college career elsewhere. Providence announced on Saturday that Austin was released from his scholarship."

I don't blame him. The window of opportunity for a baller is small. PC will be fine.

Edit:

Didn't see this original post on the transfer by SendItInJerome in the recruiting section:

We won't miss him?

You sir are totally out of touch. Brandon Austin WANTED to be at Providence because of Ed Cooley. He chose our tiny, recently unaccomplished school over the likes of Texas, UCONN, Georgetown, and Temple after bailing from Penn State.

I don't know the details of the sketchy female encounter by him and Bullock, but what I do know is no criminal charges were pressed. The school looks terrible here. Either they covered up sexual assault/rape or imposed premarital sex Catholic code of conduct on these young men.

Our credibility in Philly is ruined because of this. We won't be getting a high-major recruit from Philly for some time. Providence has no depth right now and has three reliable Big East players in Cotton, Henton, and Harris. The team is crumbling and won't sniff .500 in conference play. Next year we have a good recruiting class coming in, but only two reliable veterans in Henton and Harris. Dunn is legit but so far he's proven to be Mr. Glass.

Brandon Austin has a versatile offensive game and is a definitive NBA prospect. He would have been a reliable ball handler (certainly better than Fortune). Providence College basketball is on life support right now and Cotton is the only thing keeping it alive. Our offense is run by or through Cotton. Providence is definitely finishing 9/10 in the Big East. You heard it here first!

Well, Memphis and Iowa State have no standards so I'm sure he'll end up at one of those schools....

there are other things that may have happened other than PC covering up rape or imposing premarital sex code of conduct on the students. They wouldnt be suspended just for having sex. Could it have involved some type of social media? Pics posted? tweets ? I dont know. Apparently what ever it was it was deemed inappropriate

Call me biased, but I have no trust in Catholic institutions when it comes to sexual misconduct. Just my opinion.

To FF2: I know you're a doom-and-gloomer this year for Providence, but I believe things are far worse than you can imagine. For Providence to be relevant next year Kris Dunn needs to develop a shot and play like a lottery pick.

If you want to beat Providence press the entire game and get into transition. Cotton will become exhausted and the Friars will become ragged far quicker than the opponent. Fortune is a turnover machine waiting to happen. Kadeem Batts is playing like Kadeem Flatt.

If the kid is an academic or discipline risk, then let him leave. If he wanted to stick it out, he would (see: jayvaughn pinkston sitting out a year at nova but sticking it out because he is a good kid).

Look, we are not in the american conference where schools like memphis, uconn, cincy, temple, etc... Are known for looking the other way when kids cause problems. And I like that.

Let's build a foundation of good kids who are either willing to stick it out if they get in trouble, or not get in trouble to begin with. I don't want us to be a thug/renegade program, and I like that ass a whole we aren't a thug renagade conference. I didn't like watching guys like jim calhoun look the other way at misconduct with regularity, and I think they found a perfect home in a conference where misconduct seems to be a way of life.

Take the high road and win the right way. Don't sacrifice integrity for one player. Its not worth it.

(And I honestly think that calhoun's off court transgressions played a role in uconn's acc snub. The other coaches knew about calhoun's reputation, and uconn's willingness to look the other way when he "fixed" problems for players, and they didn't want "that type" of program in their conference)

i have no inside info on what is going on behind the scenes, but it appears that PC is trying to run a program with higher standards of conduct than some others. Lets face it the Keno Davis years raised some eyebrows.
I too am frustrated with all the setbacks, but deep down id rather have them than find out 3 -5 years from now that PC covered up some scandal or had very standards in regards to its athletes. It doesnt sound like this incident was that severe and I hope Austin has learned a lesson from it

well said ff2

if they don't want to do what it takes to be a PC student athlete, let them leave... PC and the Big East will be fine without him. Let him go to UCONN if he wants to act like that and still expect to play.

SLU only suspended a couple basketball players for rape (there was some uncertainty in the case), so there is the precedent there at a similar institution. But yeah, if it wasn't rape, something else must have been going on.
