NCAA Credits

Postby GumbyDamnit! » Fri Mar 08, 2013 12:08 pm

It was pointed out in another thread that it is looking like the NEW Big East will be getting at least 6 (maybe more if a Prov, Xavier or SJU can make a serious conf tourney run). Can anyone knowledgeable on the subject explain how tournament credits work? Would monies earned for this years tourney get paid out immediately among all current members of the league that each school is in this year or transfer to new league and paid out over a period of a few years? I recall it wa smore like the latter.

If indeed the latter I would think that this is a really nice start to the league. Getting 50% of the league in the tourney, and some nice tourney cash, is impressive by any standard. I think only the Big10 and OLD BE has a shot at that high of a % this year.

I've got :

G'Town
Butler
Marq.
Creighton
St. Lou
Nova

Nice going boys! I also think there is a credit for each win in the tourney so, I for one, am going to pulling BIG TIME for my new conference bretheren to make serious runs in the tourney this year.

I would think the Butler, SLU, Creighton NCAA Units will belong to the A10 and MVC for 2012-13 season.

It is a rolling six years and the worth of the credit changes each year. I have no idea how the worth of the credit is figured out.

Lots of questions re the NCAA tournament credits. Hopefully some of you experts can help me understand how this works.

Are the credits awarded to the conferences or the schools?

Does anyone know the A-10 conference agreement on how credits get split? Does the school that earned them get a share or are credit payments split equally among the schools?

If a team was in the A-10 in 2012-13 but moves to the Big East, does it still get its share of credit payments for its own and other A-10 schools' 2012-13 NCAA tournament credits?

Is Butler still receiving payments from its two championship game runs or were those all left behind with the Horizon League?

NCAA units are owned by the conferences. They are usually distributed half to the school that earned them and half equally to all schools in the conference. Currently Butler and VCU have no units as they gave them up when they moved to the A-10. Any school that leaves to go to the Big E will also have to give up any earned credits.

From what I understand, Butler gave those up for the bigger TV money of the A-10. It was, eventually, supposed to be a bigger cash cow...but that may end up in the Big East.

The $250,000 number is roughly accurate. That number is per win with a max of 4 or 5 total per year. So, if it is four a school would collect a million. I hope we get to keep the credits becuse I understand Villanova has the most being that they made the NCAA's 7 of last 8 year with a final four and some Sweet 16's mixed in.

I think the C7 is getting to keep theirs.

According to The Star Ledger:
"The Catholic 7 will receive $10 million — or nearly $1.5 million per school — of the $100 million in exit fees already paid to the conference during realignment. Had the schools stayed with the current Big East, they would’ve been entitled to the standard split of 65 percent to the football schools and 35 percent to the basketball schools.
However, to leave the league early without penalty, the seven schools had to leave $25 million on the table. Perhaps the biggest win for the Catholic 7 is retaining their NCAA Tournament units. Forbes.com  reported yesterday that the schools will keep $7.25 million in tournament units — money won for a conference by winning games in the NCAA Tournament — earned in the past five seasons and this upcoming tournament. Units in the 2013 NCAA Tournament are believed to be valued at more than $250,000."

If this is accurate, this looks like as good a settlement as one could have hoped for. Now let's root for success in this year's Big Dance!
