The new league, which will keep the Big East name and play its men’s basketball tournament in Madison Square Garden, will be a financial boon for Xavier.
A new television deal with Fox Sports will bring XU’s annual take to nearly $2.5 million, compared to about $400,000 annually now from the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Graham said all conference members, including new invitees Xavier, Butler and Creighton, will share the television revenue equally.
It will start playing in the league this coming fall in all 18 sports.
But Graham said the impact will spread far beyond the athletic department budget. For example, high-school seniors who have been accepted at Xavier but have not committed for next fall will get an e-mail in the next few days touting the new conference.
“I would be hard-pressed to name a single decision by the university that is more sweeping in its impact,” Graham said. “I can’t help but think that the Xavier brand will have a glow to it because of this.”
The bottom line: National reports say the “Catholic 7” schools could collect up to $5 million a year.
New members such as Xavier could collect only about half of that amount, but that still is much more than the estimated $400,000 a year they receive in the Atlantic 10, ESPN reported.
