I'm not sure I get why they would sign a 12 year deal with the Big East only to hope we fail some benchmarks so they can nab the ACC in a couple of seasons. Maybe the benchmarks are unrealistic so they figure they can dump us at will, while our schools just took what they could get? If MSG really needs to give the boot to the Big East for the ACC to come, how can they count on a non-guaranteed out?

The extension was signed in October 2012 so there was still some more movement potentially happening and I think MSG wanted to have an out if the conference ended up being a mess of bad schools (i.e. the AAC). It would be interesting to see what these benchmarks are but I would assume they relate to attendance and revenues.

MSG is important to the BIg East from a perception standpoint. I love that we are staying there. However, there are a ton of potential sites and a new arena in Chicago could be one of them.

They did. How the ACC fits into MSG's plans is undetermined.

I don't believe so. The agreement was mysteriously not part of the announcement of the formation of the new Big East that day when a few presidents spoke. My understanding is that the current extension/contract with MSG was just transferred/kept with the new conference formation as part of the asset transfer/name etc.

Right now, The Big East has the Garden through 2026. So long as tickets are sold, that will remain so as the league leases the building for the days they are there. If the conference is making money off it, MSG has no reason to look elsewhere. Also, the ACC has made clear that it will not have a permanent site for their tourney. MSG has made clear it needs to be a permanent location and is not interested in being part of a rotation. Barclays will open up in a few years when the A-10 agreement expires. What is interesting in when the ACC requested bids in the Fall for the tourney from 2016 to I think 2022, neither Barclays (which was available or the Garden submitted a bid. There are no reports out of New York from anyone indicating MSG is about to host the ACC.

There is almost zero chance Barclay's brings back the A-10 tournament with the landscape changing.
