The Dayton television market is the eighth-best in the country when it comes to college basketball for the second straight year, according to research analyzed by ESPN. ESPN examined the 56 metered markets that carried its college basketball games in 2012-13, and ranked them by ratings.

UD had the most fans of any out-of-town team at last year’s Charleston Classic, the Flyers’ championship run in the 2011 Old Spice Classic, and is expected to have the most fans at next season’s EA Sports Maui Invitational. Dayton has already pre-sold the most tournament packages among the eight-team Maui field that includes Arkansas, Baylor, Cal, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Syracuse and host Chaminade.

Dayton has football! In fact Dayton football travels all over the country to play. You could say that they are a "national brand."

More to the point, this article is about viewership of all college basketball games on ESPN. I mean, did millions of Dayton Fans watch them play Temple on ESPNU this year? I suppose its possible based on the info in this article.

OH NO!!! Dayton has a nationally branded football team. This obviously eliminates them from contention for inclusion. Looks like SLU and UR are in!!! Celebrations all around!!!

Wait wait wait... not so fast. Sure Dayton football is known throughout the country (from the shores of San Diego CA...to the hills of Poughkeepsie NY) but they aren't going BCS any time soon. Since they are non scholarship FCS, I very much expect them to join Ivy League in football. Harvard and Dayton would make a natural rivalry. I would still include them in the BE basketball discussion. If only because of the millions of Dayton residents who watch Big Ten Basketball on ESPN.

Personally put me in the category of people who respect Dayton and think they would be a good fit and while I might not like it i could easily argue that if two teams were to be added it should be Dayton and Richmond. I also firmly believe that neither Dayton's nor Richmond's esteemed football programs will have any bearing on whether they get in or not.

I saw an argument for Dayton that was actually really interesting as to their value:

Dayton typically plays well in the non-con schedule and doesn't play well in the league. Which stands to reason that they may be a great add...they'll help the profile in nonconference without ever being a threat in the league.
